Which Hair Type is Right for You?
Today I want to take a closer look at the four coat types you’ll find in dachshunds: shorthair, longhair, wirehair, and the lesser-known silky. Understanding the differences between their coats can help you choose the right companion—or simply appreciate their variety even more.
1. Shorthair Dachshunds –
Appearance: These dachshunds have a sleek, shiny coat that lies close to the body. Their coat is short and even all over, giving them a smooth appearance which is why some refer to them as "smooth coats".
Grooming Needs: Minimal. A quick brush every week or so is enough to keep their coats looking healthy and shiny. They do shed, but it's hardly noticeable.
2. Longhair Dachshunds –
Appearance: Longhaired dachshunds have soft, flowing hair that’s especially noticeable on their ears, chest, belly, and tail. They have a bit of a regal elegant look.
Grooming Needs: Moderate to high. They do shed quite a bit and need regular brushing (a few times a week) and bathing to keep tangles and mats at bay and to keep the hair off of you and the furniture. If you have pet hair allergies, the longhair dachshunds might not be for you.
3. Wirehair Dachshunds –
Appearance: Wirehaired dachshunds have a rough, coarse outer coat and a softer undercoat. They are known for having a beard, bushy eyebrows, and a wiry outer coat.
Grooming Needs: Low to moderate. Their coat is great for people who want a dog that doesn’t shed much or is relatively hypoallergenic. Occasional brushing and hand-stripping usually once a year will keep their wiry coat healthy and keep mats at bay.
4. Silky Dachshunds –
Appearance: "Silky" dachshunds aren’t officially recognized as a standard coat type, but we get them every now and then (breeding longhair to wirehair). Their fur is a combo of longhair and wirehair which means they have long wavy hair everywhere including beards and eyebrows.
Grooming Needs: Moderate to high. They need regular brushing to keep that dreamy coat looking its best. They may also need occasional hair cuts to keep the hair out of their eyes. However, they don't shed as much as a longhair.
So… which one is your favorite? Or are you like the me and just want them all?
